Extraction Q & A

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a procedure where your dentist or an oral surgeon removes a painful, infected, or misshapen tooth. Prior to removal, your dentist performs a comprehensive evaluation utilizing a physical exam and dental X-rays to determine if extraction is necessary.

You may need an extraction for numerous reasons, including:

  • Extreme decay or damage
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Infection
  • Misshapen baby teeth
  • Teeth crowding
  • Tooth misalignment

Impacted wisdom teeth are one of the most common reasons for oral surgery. Once your wisdom teeth become impacted, they can’t grow inside your mouth properly.

This impaction of wisdom teeth can result in infection, the decay of the surrounding teeth, and gum disease. Impacted teeth may also cause the growth of tumors and cysts in some instances.

Extractions are frequently recommended as a preventive measure.

What happens during a tooth extraction?

Prior to the procedure, you should tell your dentist about any medications you’re taking and your medical history to prevent surgical complications. If the tooth being extracted is fully exposed, your provider can give you a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort during the procedure.

If the tooth in question is broken or impacted, as is commonly the case of wisdom teeth, your dentist administers general anesthesia. In this case, you’ll need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before surgery, and you’ll need someone to drive you home.

What should I expect after an extraction?

After an extraction, you may need stitches. You may also experience some mild swelling or pain, so your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe a stronger form of medication for pain management.

After an extraction, you should adjust your diet to include soft foods for the first few days after as you heal. You should avoid using straws and smoking because they can harm the open wound and stifle healing. Proper oral hygiene is also critical; it keeps the area clean and facilitates proper healing.

You need to visit your dentist a few weeks after surgery to ensure the area is healing correctly. Your dentist can suggest tooth replacement options, such as dental bridges or implants, to ensure your remaining teeth do not shift out of proper alignment.
